Colic in Horses the Causes

Published by Trevor Wozencroft under Colic Horses

Since the advent of the modern  (dewormers) , the most important cause of colic in horses is nutrition related mismanagement.

Nutritionally induced colic can be grouped into two categories:

  • Improper forage grain ratios
  • Inadequate amounts of forage, and the  use of tainted feedstuffs.

Far and away the more important cause of colic is improper forage grain ratios in feed.

The horse is a wandering herbivore, a continuous grazier and has an absolute requirement for long stem hay or pasture, the horse has evolved eating mainly grass.

And if allowed, will eat for 16 — 18 hours each day.

Failure to realise this simple fact probably results in more colic in horses than any other single cause.

The fact that hay is  limited in some  instances, it is made worse by the fact that in many of these cases the horses are on a high level of grain intake as well.

On  high grain diets, rate of passage of   ingesta is increased, allowing more readily fermentable carbohydrates to reach the hind gut.

Fermentation of this material often results in a decrease  pH under the influence of the lactic acid that is produced.

This decrease in gut pH causes a shift in the microflora of the hindgut, which can result in the release of toxins and subsequent clinical symptoms of colic.

Additionally, in this type of disorder  their is frequently an increase in the gas production in the hindgut that may lead to a flatulence and subsequent colic.

Colic in horses can be prevented and treated, with Photonic Therapy.

That successfully used Photonic Therapy to treat her horses colic.

Photonic Therapy Reverses Colic

My 25 year old school pony (the absolute golden girl of the stable) came down with colic one evening.

She has been prone to colicing in the past and has always need vetinary intervention as soon as possible as she tends to worsen rapidly.

This time due to her going down at 5.30pm (out of vet hours hence the call fee etc escallates) I thought I would at least do the colic points with the photon torch.
So – I went over all the recommended points a couple of times over with a good 30 seconds on each point.

Before my eyes and to my disbelief she started looking brighter in the eye and not wanting to go to ground constantly.

After 5 minutes she was happily eating her hay – and never looked back!
I monitored her a couple of time before turning in for the night – all good!

To this day I still marvel at this case.

I have used the torch many many times over with muscle soreness etc with excellent results.

Every stable and indeed household should have one!

Very nice article and straight to the point. I am not sure if this is actually the best place to ask but do you people have any thoughts on where to hire some professional writers? Thx :)
